It is said to live and die in the town of your birth is an act of failure, so with that in mind I will now set about defending it and my existence therein/within.
Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Britain and to back this up there is a big castle in the middle of it. The town is built on a hill so that back in the day any intruders headed in its direction could be seen from a long way off and in order to defend it fire could be reigned down on anyone below looking to threaten it.
These days it is a barracks town, home to thousands of squaddies and the tensions that come there with. That said I have always thought this element helped keep crime rates down to an extent; ain’t no organised crime going to tackle that.
For me Colchester is very well positioned in the grand scheme of things being sat between London and the coast with countless greenery and fields surrounding it. I have to work in London but at the same time like most people I have to escape London and at the end of the day this is a good place to come back to.
Over the years of my existence the face of Colchester has regularly changed in expression but always remained constant in identity. Growing up and living in and around Clacton coming up to Colchester felt like a treat and an adventure but since moving here in 2000 my world has expanded and that is now how I just about view London in comparison to Colchester.
If you have never been here you will never know.
To be continued…….
